2023 Ford F-150 Lightning
The Ford F-150 has been the country's best-selling vehicle for almost 50 years, so the automaker sought to capitalize on the truck's popularity by offering it as an electric vehicle. After debuting in 2022 as a full-size electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning made quite the debut in its inaugural year. For the 2023 model year, Ford made a few changes, like adding an available pro trailer hitch, but kept the deft handling and overall enjoyment.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
When shopping for the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning, you can choose from four trims: Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum. While Ford designed this truck to resemble its gasoline-powered counterpart, the F-150 Lightning is only available with a 5.5-foot bed that includes several handy features, such as in-box LED lighting, a tailgate step, and lockable tie-downs.
Electric Motor
The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning has two powertrain options. The standard powertrain has two electric motors with a 98-kWh battery pack for a combined 452 horsepower, and the optional powertrain features a 131-kWh battery that increases the horsepower to 580. Both engines produce 775 pound-feet of torque, one of the highest outputs on the market. The vehicle also comes standard with four-wheel drive.
Performance
According to Ford, the F-150 Lightning can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Every model includes all-terrain or all-season tires, skid plates, and a locking rear differential. With the standard battery pack, the truck has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, while the extended range has a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. The Max Trailer Tow package increases those numbers to 7,700 and 10,000 pounds, respectively. The pickup also boasts a maximum payload capacity of 2,235 pounds.
The truck has an estimated driving range of 240 miles with the standard battery pack. The XLT and Lariat trims with the extended range battery pack have a range of up to 320 miles, and the Platinum trim can go up to 300 miles.
Interior
Five people can sit comfortably inside the 2023 F-150 Lightning. Space is plentiful throughout the cabin, and even those sitting in the rear seats have almost 44 inches of legroom. The interior also includes a variety of seat and steering wheel configurations, so you can remain comfortable no matter how long the drive is.
You can choose between two infotainment systems within the F-150 Lightning. The standard 12-inch touchscreen display is more intuitive because you can access several functions via physical controls. By contrast, the larger optional 15.5-inch touchscreen display sits on the dashboard vertically and has more settings on the screen. A few standard infotainment features include navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, voice recognition, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Higher trims include satellite and HD radio, wireless smartphone charging, and a premium stereo system.
Safety Features
Every 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning comes with a handful of driver-assistance features, including automatic high-beam headlights, rear parking sensors, forward-automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. You can also add a few safety upgrades, like stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, intersection assistance, and a surround-view parking camera system.
